Artist Biography

Liza Camilo is a New York–born, Boca Raton–based photographer whose work explores the intersections of memory, migration, identity, and the quiet resilience found within everyday spaces. Through a deeply intuitive and emotive lens, she captures moments that transcend documentation, revealing layered narratives that continue to unfold with each viewing.

Born in New York to immigrant parents—her mother Cuban and her father Dominican—Liza spent her formative years in Texas, where an early sensitivity to landscape and light began to take shape. At the age of twenty, she returned to New York City, where she spent over a decade working in the fashion industry. This experience gave her a unique perspective on visual culture, composition, and the relationship between aesthetics and storytelling—elements that continue to inform her photographic practice.

Largely self-taught, Liza began her formal exploration of photography in 2008 while pregnant with her first child. She first studied at a community center in Gahanna, Ohio, and later refined her work through critique-based courses at the Boca Raton Museum of Art School. Her artistic path deepened through her connection to Cuba, where she found lasting inspiration in the island’s visual richness, layered history, and enduring spirit.

Her work has been exhibited internationally throughout the United States, Cuba, Australia, and South Africa. Notable exhibitions include her solo presentation 60.4720° N, 8.4689° E at La Pared Negra, Fábrica de Arte Cubano; the collective exhibition Ni de aquí ni de allá at Mansión Castillo in Havana; and her participation in Alquimia de una Isla at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas (MOCAA) in Miami in 2025, a joint exhibition with Lianet Martínez, where Liza presented her photographic series My Life. She also participated in the collective exhibition Descendencias at the Bienal de La Habana, Teatro Nacional de Cuba (December 2024 – January 2025), and was included in the collective exhibition Sobre el Muro at La Pared Negra, Fábrica de Arte Cubano in 2025.

Her work has been selected for international exhibitions at BSIDE Gallery in Melbourne, Australia, and FotoZA Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has received multiple awards, including First Place in Photography at the Beaux Arts Festival of Art (2023, 2024), First Place at Carnaval on the Mile in 2026, and Second Place in 2025. Her work has also been featured in Cuba Plus Magazine and other cultural publications.

Across her body of work, Liza is drawn to the subtle imprints of lived experience—spaces, objects, and gestures that carry memory across geographies. Her images inhabit the space between presence and absence, where identity is continuously shaped and redefined. Whether exploring themes of diaspora, womanhood, or personal transformation, her work invites viewers into a contemplative dialogue between what is seen and what is felt.

Liza Camilo es una fotógrafa nacida en Nueva York y radicada en Boca Ratón, cuya obra explora las intersecciones entre la memoria, la migración, la identidad y la resiliencia silenciosa presente en los espacios cotidianos. Nacida en Nueva York de padres inmigrantes—su madre cubana y su padre dominicano—Liza pasó sus años formativos en Texas, donde desarrolló una temprana sensibilidad hacia el paisaje y la luz.
